THINGS TO CONSIDER DURING A BASE PERIOD CHANGE

  1. The beginning date of the claim is the Sunday of the week in which your claim is filed. The option you choose will determine the effective date of your unemployment insurance claim.
  2. The base period is the 4 calendar quarters of earnings used to establish your claim. The wages paid in your base period will determine both your weekly benefit amount and your maximum benefit amount. Base period changes occur in the months of January, April, July, and October. The base period dates for Option #1 and Option #2 are different because of a base period change.
  3. The weekly benefit amount is the amount of your weekly benefit. It is the amount you will receive each week if you meet all eligibility requirements. The weekly benefit amount may or may not be different in Option #1 and Option #2.
  4. The maximum benefit is the total dollar amount that is payable during the one-year period of the claim. The maximum award is 26 times the weekly benefit amount or one-half of the total base period wages, whichever is less. The maximum benefit amount may or may not be different in Option #1 and Option #2.

Consider the following when choosing Option #1 or Option #2:

  • If you choose Option #2, there will be a delay of one week in the beginning date of your claim.
  • If the weekly benefit amount is higher in one option but the maximum benefit amount is lower, consider if the benefits of getting a higher weekly amount for a shorter period outweigh the benefits of receiving a lower weekly benefit amount but receiving it for a longer period.
  • Remember that the unemployment insurance claim effective date (Option #1 or Option #2) you choose will remain in effect for one year.
