Your Unemployment Insurance (UI) Claim Ends on MM/DD/YYYY.

A regular unemployment insurance benefit year ends 12 months after the claim started. One of these two conditions now apply:

  • You do not need to reapply if you did not earn enough wages in the last 18 months to establish a new claim, regardless of whether you are on a regular claim, federal extension, or Pandemic Unemployment Assistance (PUA) claim. Continue to certify for benefits, and we will notify you when your benefit weeks are processed.
  • You must reapply for a new claim (even if you are currently on an extension) if you earned enough wages in the last 18 months and are still unemployed or working part time and in need of benefits. We will notify you when your new claim is processed. This usually takes two to three weeks.
    • If you are unsure if you have enough wages as reported by an employer, log in to the UI Online landing page (portal.edd.ca.gov) and select 'File New Claim'. We will either:
    • Immediately tell you that you do not have enough wages to establish a new claim. OR
    • You will be provided instructions on how to submit a new application.

Why Would I Need to Reapply?

Your claim ends on MM/DD/YYYY. Under usual circumstances, this means that you would not receive any benefits for the weeks after MM/DD/YYYY, even if you have a balance remaining on your claim. But with the pandemic, there are federal extensions available to most claimants.

If you did work during the last 18 months, you could qualify for a new claim. We recommend you submit an online application one to five days before MM/DD/YYYY or as soon as possible after to not miss a week of benefits. If you wait to submit your application, your benefits could be delayed.

After you reapply, we will let you know if you do qualify for a new regular unemployment claim and any next steps you need to take. Depending on your eligibility, we may move you to a new claim, add a federal extension to your expired claim, or continue your existing extension.

Visit https://edd.ca.gov/Unemployment/UI_Online for information on how to apply for and manage your claim.
